How Do I Get A List Without Paying A Big Price For it?

By Daegan | June 19, 2007

Since this morning I’ve been swamped with question, so let’s
get right to answering them!

The following two questions were so similar that I will
answer them together.

“How do you get a list without paying a big price for it?”

-Josie Glanville

“What is the best way to obtain a list of buying customers
and store that list on my computer?”

-DALE SCHRUMPF

So if I get you guys right you want to obtain a list of
customers or just some sort of list without paying much for
it.

It’s a great question, but to be honest it’s quite vague.

What sort of customers are you looking for? Why are trying
to obtain a list of customers?

Both are crucial questions to address when answering these
question.

Why?

Well just any list of customers could mean anything. There
are several list that you can buy, but if you buy a list of
customers that bought Fiji water and then you tried to sell
them on your network marketing opportunity you wouldn’t fair
so well on the results end of things.

So you must know the exact type of customer list you want to
buy, in other word, unique customer demographics.

Are they men or are they women?

Is it a list of customers who bought online or who bought
through direct mail?

Are you looking for a list of customer that live in the US
or worldwide?

Did these customers buy at a high price point, or are you
just looking for customers that have bought at any price
point?

What did they buy?

These are just a few of the question you MUST address before
buying a list of customers, and before you ever put a cent
on the line you should be sure to know the answers to these
questions specifically.

I’ll assume that what we are looking for is a list of people
who have bought and who are interested in network marketing
so we have a little direction here.

And let’s say that our perfect prospect is a man in the age
range of 20 to 40 years of age who has bought multiple
products online having to do with network marketing and
lives in the US.

Now we know a little bit more about the customer we’re
looking for!

Next you go and look for this person on other peoples
mailing list that you can buy advertising with.

But wait . . .

How are you going to advertise to these people?

Is it going to be online via an email or offline via a
postcard or letter?

Ok let’s say an email is how we are going to advertise.

Good! First you need to make sure you have tested ad copy
that pulls results based on prior results.

Once you have that you start looking, and the best place to
start is to find a list broker who you trust. Tell them
exactly the type of prospects that you’re looking for.

They will go to work and research it and pull up comparable
lists for you to do some test advertising with.

You send them your creative and the list vendor will have to
approve it. If so then you’re on.

List costs will vary, and so will the quality so you’ll want
to do a small test which will cost about $500 or so to see
if the list is any good.

(Probably more if it’s an email blast that they are doing.)

The deal is though you don’t get to keep the whole list
you get a one shot email blast so whatever landing page you’re
send your leads to better be optimized as well with some way
to capture interested prospects out of the traffic you
generate.

Then you get to keep those leads.

There is no way to buy someone’s list of customers and keep
it. That’s not how it works, the best you’ll be able to do
is rent space for an ad and keep the leads you generate.

If you’re just looking for a list to buy online that isn’t
neseccarily a customer list you can do a google search and
find many people willing to take your money, but my advice
is don’t do it.

You’ll never know where the leads came from, or how fresh
they are. It’s a dicey game at best.

The few attempts I made in doing this always failed
miserably. It’s literally a waste of money.

The question of where do I get a list is somewhat of a
misguided one.

The truth is you don’t want someone else’s list you
want your own. You will have no relationship to someone
else’s list. You need a list that knows and trusts you.

That can’t be bought from a vendor you have to create it
yourself one lead and one customer at a time.

But here’s the other side of that coin. It will take some
time to create, but that’s your list and no one elses. If you
serve them well you can support a profitable business with
it.

That’s what you want in the end.

What I recommend is either find a niche that you love and
start marketing to it, find out what they want and create a
product that fills that need and from a unique perspective
and build from there.

This will take years to master, but well worth it.

Now if you’re looking to generate a list to grow your
network marketing business that’s a slightly different
story.

You can use a funded proposal system like Power Prospecting
System to create a list of targeted prospects from traffic
you generate online via PPC, article marketing, etc and have
that list of leads pay for themselves through buying that
particular product or service in the system itself.

Then you can funnel those profits back out and generate more
leads. You’ll create a list of targeted prospect that know
and trust you and that you can recruit into your business
from without actaully paying for it that way.

There ain’t no magic genie you can give $20 to and have him
give you a list of 100,000 leads dying for what you have to
offer. It just doesn’t exist.

To conclude the question is more complex than it appears
on the surface, and if recruiting people into your network
marketing business is what you’re after using a funded
proposal like PPS is the most powerful and cost effective
approach.
